OHP Open Card: Mental Health Counselor
Members of the Oregon Health Plan ( https://www.oregon.gov/oha/hsd/ohp/pages/index.aspx ) often encounter situations in which they are directed to a community mental health service without much forethought being given to the matter.
However, Since the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these community mental health organizations are understaffed and unable to provide counseling services to all of those individuals in need.
Unfortunately, sometimes this also leads to clients being moved from counselor to counselor, and it becomes difficult for the client. This Can lead to less than optimal results for the client getting the help that they need.
You are feeling exhausted after yet another “break-up” with your therapist, or maybe you feel but you haven’t been able to find a therapist that you really feel comfortable with and you’ve become discouraged I want let you know that there is hope!

Finding One’s Way Through Mental Illness
Finding one’s way through the mental health system might seem like trying to find one’s way through a a complicated maze. When you are already coping with stress, it is simply too tough to engage in critical thought about the situation and it’s easy to feel like giving up.
Some OHP members are happy with the first reference they get. They are grateful for the opportunity to receive treatment, and they think that private practitioners might be too busy or expensive to see them.
They also realize that it is important to keep seeking treatment for their mental illness, even if it is difficult because this is the best way to improve their condition.
The majority of private practice therapists are limited in their ability to market and to struggle to get the message out to OHP members that they are available to provide mental health counseling. However, trust me when I say that there are many counselors to choose from, and they want to help you!
