The process of starting and initial stages or working with a therapist or a counselor can seem, confusing overwhelming and quite honestly, unlike anything that we’ve ever done before. In this video, which is part one of a two-part series, I will explain a bit about what the process of counseling looks like after the first initial session.
The two main topics that I speak about are the importance of collaborative feedback, whereby I invite the individual to share with me how they felt after their first few sessions, or the initial stages of counseling are going. This can include a range of topics including what seems to be working or helpful, also what is not helpful. As well as holding a nonjudgmental and safe place to explore whatever feelings may have come up in the first couple counseling sessions.
I stress the word ‘collaborative’ because I think it’s very important to empower the individual who is receiving counseling (I really don’t like to use the words; ‘client,’ ‘patient’ etc.) to advocate for themselves as well as to share what they feel is the best path for them.
I always say that “you are the expert on you.” I have no idea what it’s like to be in your heart mind and body. With that I encourage the individuals that I work with to find that voice and to connect with their inner knowingness of how I can best serve them. That can start out small in the beginning where I may layout a bit more of the framework until the individual can step more and more into finding their voice, and reconnecting to their confidence in identifying how I can serve them as a collaborative facilitator in their healing journey.
